I’m not the most intuitive chef.  I have my staple dishes I can usually pull off without a hitch, but to invent creative recipes out of what’s on hand is just not a skill I have perfected yet.  I need a recipe to truly understand flavors.  However, I’m not completely inept – despite what my family and my husband might tell you.

Once a month my family gathers “potluck style” at my parents’ house and I think everyone underestimates what I could bring as I’m usually assigned chips or crudites.  This week I think they were pleasantly surprised by my winter fruit salad.

I love that citrus fruits are in season during the winter months.  They just look and taste like sunshine which is just the reminder we all need this time of year.  For the salad I picked up some grapefruit , blood oranges, and navel oranges.  I added blueberries and poppy seeds for color contrast and roughly chopped pistachios for decadence.  Once everything was doused in a light raspberry vinaigrette it was ready to go.  I bought everything at Outpost since they always have the best fruit selection.  Easy peasy and my family loved it.  I love how pretty it is, too, don’t you?  Do you have any simple dishes you’ve “invented?”  Leave a comment below…we’d love to hear!
